Course Description:

According to literature, the survival rate of endodontically treated teeth is close to 98%. How do we update our understanding of endodontics so that we can care for our patients and close in on the 98% published survival rate? The most common reason for a failed root canal treatment is inadequate treatment. However, there are some cases in which a root canal treatment is carried out in accordance with the highest standards, and yet still results in failure. In most such cases, the endodontic failure results from persistent intra-radicular infection. In other cases, extra-radicular infections and intrinsic or extrinsic non-microbial factors might be implicated in the failure.

The purpose of this lecture is to discuss the etiological factors of failed root canal treatments using a series of clinical cases. It will aid clinicians in choosing between surgical and non-surgical management of a failed root canal in an evidence-based manner. Indications for the non-surgical vs. surgical retreatment of failed endodontic cases are discussed in order to maximize the success of an endodontic retreatment.
