Signs and Symptoms of an Endodontic Emergency
Endodontic emergencies often require immediate attention to prevent further complications. Below are the key symptoms to watch for:
- Persistent Tooth Pain: Constant pain that disrupts your daily life often signals nerve or pulp damage requiring immediate care.

- Tooth Discoloration: Darkening or grayish discoloration of a tooth may indicate internal damage to the pulp.
- Sensitivity to Temperature: Sharp, lingering pain triggered by hot or cold foods or drinks often points to pulp inflammation or damage.
- Trauma: Cracked, chipped, or knocked-out teeth from sports, falls, or other accidents require urgent intervention.
- Pus Formation: A visible abscess, foul taste, or pus around a tooth indicates an advanced infection that needs immediate treatment.

Causes of Endodontic Emergencies
Understanding what leads to dental emergencies can help you act quickly to resolve them.
- Untreated Infections: Bacteria from untreated cavities can reach the pulp, causing severe pain, swelling, and abscesses.
- Trauma: Accidents or injuries can fracture teeth or expose the pulp, leading to infection or pain.
- Failed Treatments: Teeth that were previously treated with root canals may develop new infections due to incomplete cleaning or structural failure of the restoration.
- Advanced Decay: Rapidly progressing cavities can expose the pulp, creating the need for emergency treatment.
- Temporary Restoration Failures: Failed temporary fillings or crowns can leave teeth vulnerable to bacterial invasion.
At EOI NYC, we have extensive experience managing these conditions, ensuring patients receive the best care available.

Dr. Dayani is one of the first dentists I’ve been to who actually takes great care and time to talk about his diagnosis and the available treatments. He is very clear and thorough… He arrived at a diagnosis of an atypical condition quickly and accurately; and, speaking from my experience, I would have great confidence in any further recommendations or treatments by his office… After spending a surprisingly long time examining my teeth and explaining the x-rays, he said that the evidence is inconclusive. Odds are that I will need a root canal, he said, but just in case I don’t, he suggested that we wait and see rather than just dive into an expensive procedure. In short, he was thorough and knowledgeable in his diagnosis, communicative with me, and ethical in his conclusions.Dr. Dayani is one of the first dentist I’ve been to who actually takes great care and time to talk about his diagnosis and the available treatments. Dr. Dayani is an efficient, no-nonsense practitioner, one of the best I ever have encountered. He arrived at a diagnosis of an atypical condition quickly and accurately; and, speaking from my experience, I would have great confidence in any further recommendations or treatments by his office. His staff was most helpful in arranging after-visit details such as insurance submissions.

Not only did he emotionally and mentally comfort me before the root canal, he did an amazing job!! I felt no pain! He was so careful to ensure I was not in pain or discomfort, he worked as carefully but also quickly.. I’m almost in tears typing this because I am just so relieved that it’s over. FAQs About Endodontic Emergencies
What is an endodontic emergency?
An emergency involving the tooth pulp or surrounding tissues, such as abscesses, trauma, or severe pain.
Can you save a knocked-out tooth?
Yes, but acting quickly is crucial. Reinsert the tooth if possible and contact us immediately.
Do you accept walk-ins?
Absolutely! Walk-ins are welcome during our operating hours.
FAQs for Comprehensive Emergency Care Segment
What should I expect during an emergency dental visit?
During your visit, the primary focus is to alleviate your pain and address any swelling or infection. A thorough examination, including advanced diagnostics, X-rays, CT-Scans, where needed, will help determine the best course of action. The goal is always to save your natural tooth whenever possible.
What happens if my tooth cannot be saved?
If the evaluation shows that your tooth cannot be salvaged, comprehensive alternatives will be provided. These include safe and precise extractions and the option for dental implants, offering a permanent, functional solution tailored to your needs.
Why is saving natural teeth prioritized?
Natural teeth provide the best functionality and aesthetics whenever possible. Preserving your tooth helps maintain your oral health, reduces long-term costs, and ensures optimal comfort and performance. Dental Implants are great replacements for teeth. But in principle, Dental Implants are replacement for a missing tooth. They are not as good as a healthy tooth to be replacement for healthy teeth. So whenever we have the chance to save a tooth and nurse it back to health, we always prefer it to removing a tooth.
Can an extraction and implant placement be done at the same appointment?
Yes, in many cases, an extraction and dental implant placement can be performed in a single visit, depending on your oral health and the condition of the affected tooth. This approach minimizes recovery time and expedites the return to normal function.
Why choose a provider that offers both emergency care and dental rehabilitative solutions?
Choosing a provider that offers expertise in endodontics, extractions, and dental implants ensures a seamless, patient-focused experience. From immediate pain relief to long-term restorations, comprehensive care is key to achieving optimal oral health. While we are partial to saving teeth, we also perform a significant number of extraction therapy and implant rehabilitation where that option is in the patients’ best interests.

I couldn’t believe that a broken tooth, a crown, and in addition a root canal were all done in a few hours. My last dentist made me come back three days, several weeks apart. The best part is that all procedures were done without pain—something I never experienced with my previous doctors…. If you need a crown same-day, he literally has a machine that will scan your teeth/mouth and build your crown over the course of an hour or two. You can always get a temporary and return another day, but if you can wait for a bit after your procedure, you can walk out that day with no need to return. There are comfy chairs, snacks, and drinks in the back while you wait…. He is clearly an expert at his craft. He is willing to explain the procedure, support why he would recommend something, and will be direct with you when it comes to finances, treatment plans, and anything else related to your care.Alright… I dread going to the dentist, but Dr. Dayani always makes me happy for going and I gotta write this review to recommend him and his team. I found Dr. Dayani when I was experiencing tooth pain a couple years ago. I saw my dentist at the time, they said I would need a root canal, said they couldn’t do it, and that I would have to try and schedule one with someone. Given this was a Friday afternoon, that was BRUTAL and I was prepared to be miserable through the weekend when I found that Dr. Dayani was willing to meet with me that night, even if it mean staying late, in order to relieve my pain. That was HUGE. I learned that he goes out of his way to make himself available to patients that are in pain to find them relief, so much so that if you call during the weekend, it’ll ring him directly. I’ve never had a dentist like that before. I’ve since had to get a LOT of dental work done in the last year or so (3 crowns, fillings, cleanings) and working with other dentists has been a drag where they try to get you in and out quick and have a line out the door that they’re trying to grind through. I’ve had it where they would even finish rinsing the gunk out of your mouth after a filling. I never got that with Dr. Dayani. You are getting his patient, thoughtful attention when he’s working with you. He’s attentive and always checking in to make sure things aren’t too uncomfortable while going through any procedures.
